Rooibos (Aspalatus linearis) is a popular, great-tasting, caffeine-free beverage from the Cape in South Africa, grown in the highlands of the Cederberg mountain range. In an age-old method, the leaves and twigs of the Rooibos are harvested and
fermented to liberate its broad spectrum of antioxidants particularly Aspalathin and other nutrients. Rooibos has a unique, mild and very pleasant taste and since it is free of caffeine, you can drink it all day. Rooibos tea is low in tannins compared to green or black teas, making it a perfect beverage for those who like to drink tea all day.
The therapeutic value of Rooibos tea has been recognized for centuries in South Africa, where the indigenous people drink it to support healthy nerves, digestion, histamine response and skin health. Rooibos tea boasts an exceptional content of polyphenols, some of which are unique to this nutrient-rich plant including flavonoids and phenolic acids such as quercetin, luteolin, rutin and vitexin. Rooibos tea also contains the rare compound known as dihydrochalcones, (aspalathin and nothafagin). These exotic phyto-nutrients have significant immune-modulating and antioxidant protective properties.
People of the Cape have traditionally used Rooibos to support health of the liver, stomach, intestines, lungs and other organ/gland systems of the body, probably due to its extraordinary armory of antioxidants that take the bite out of oxidative stress. flavonoids of special interest in Rooibos are Quercetin and Luteolin which acts to assist relaxation of the bronchi in the lungs, under stress. Other nutrients in Rooibos like orientin, isoorientin, vitexin, isovitexin, chrysoeriol, catechin, isoqurecetin, hyperoside and rutin all contribute to this bio-active tea’s awesome health benefits.
Studies show Rooibos exhibiting effect on the activity of the antioxidant enzymes catalase, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase, especially important antioxidant enzymes for the liver. Dr. Jeanine L. Marnewick, senior researcher at the Oxidative Stress Research Center at the University of Technology in Cape Town has identified the benefits of Rooibos in humans and heart health. Reduction of oxidative damage to blood lipids was reported while Glutathione stores strengthened. Dr. Carl Albrecht, head of research at the Cancer Association of South Africa has extensively reviewed the protective effect of Rooibos consumption.
